Women's Wetsuit Fit Guide

Women's Wetsuit Fit Guide

For all you ladies who want to surf in an area where a wetsuit is necessary, there is a suit out there for you! You might be thinking, how do I find a suit that fits my odd waist, my flat chest, my broad shoulders, or my short legs? Sizing for a wetsuit can be overwhelming with the many different brands and styles to choose from, but with the right information, it doesn’t have to be. That's why we've created this comprehensive guide to help women find the best size and brand for them.

For us ladies, before selecting a wetsuit size, it’s really important to know your height, weight, chest, and waist measurements. It might not be such a big deal for men, but with our curvy bodies, those measurements are crucial in finding the best fit. Having a proper fitting suit makes all the difference in staying out in the water longer and catching more waves.

The ladies of Cleanline have generously offered to help with this guide to give you a complete overview of how various brands and types of suits fit differently. We took our measurements, looked at the size charts, tried on 2-4 suits in the size that were recommended by the chart, and then gave feedback on how the wetsuits fit. For this guide, we tried on Roxy, Patagonia, Rip Curl, Hotline, O’Neill, Billabong, Manera, and wetsuits.

Before we go into the fit differences between wetsuit brands, let's first go over some commonly asked questions:

Women's Wetsuit FAQ

Woman surfing a wave while wearing a wetsuit that fits well.

How do you measure for a women’s wetsuit?

  • Chest: Measure around the fullest part of your chest
  • Waist: Measure around the natural waistline
  • Hip: Measure around the fullest part of your bottom at the top of your legs
  • Height: Measure from top of head to bottom of feet
  • Weight: In pounds

Why isn’t my clothing size the same as my wetsuit size?

Wetsuit sizing runs completely differently than clothing sizing! Some wetsuit brands start at size “2” and work up from there, whereas other brands start at size “4”. Many clothing brands start at size “0”. Don’t be surprised if you wear a size 4 jean but end up being a size 8 wetsuit!

What’s the difference between women’s and men’s wetsuits?

The cut of men’s and women’s suits have noticeable differences. Women’s suits are cut to accommodate our curvy bottoms, chest, and narrower shoulders. Men’s suits are cut more in a rectangular shape with more room in the crotch, which can be tight-fitting for that region for the ladies. There are RARE cases where a rectangle-shaped lady with a slender body and a smaller chest fits better in a man’s suit vs a woman’s suit.

Do you wear anything under a wetsuit?

A bathing suit is typically worn under a wetsuit. Going commando is a personal preference! My advice: err on the side of caution and protect the goods with bikini bottoms.

How snug should a wetsuit fit?

Generally, a wetsuit should fit snugly, like a second skin, but not so tight that your range of motion is limited. The sleeves (if full-length) should fall at the wrist bone and the legs just above the ankle bone, and there should be no gaps, pockets, or rolls of neoprene. Wetsuits fit more snugly than clothing. Wetsuits are meant to be form-fitting. You don’t want loose folds of neoprene or large pockets of air or water in your wetsuit.

Do wetsuits stretch out?

Once a wetsuit gets wet, it will loosen up and feel more comfortable. After a few sessions, neoprene will develop “memory” and conform to your body even better. One thing that you may find unusual is the extra neoprene in the armpit of a wetsuit. This is a raglan gusset, and you’ll find it in every wetsuit out there. Since 90% of surfing is paddling, wetsuit manufacturers use this gusset to prevent fatigue and increase the range of motion.

I have long hair; will it fit in a hood?

The best way to keep hair out of the way and tucked in a hood is either braiding it or putting it in a low bun. With a bun on top of my head, it causes too much pressure with it being tucked under the hood.

Alright, now that we've covered the basics, here are the fit differences between the wetsuit companies.

Fit of Women's Billabong Wetsuits

Women's Billabong Wetsuit

General Fit: Overall, Billabong has a slightly wider cut to the neoprene, which results in a good fit for ladies with a few curves—or, for short, ladies like me with a soccer body and athletic legs. In addition, there’s a little more space up top for broad-shouldered or bigger-chested ladies, along with a roomier fit in the upper legs.

Fit for Sarah - Size Large/8

Height Weight Chest Waist Hips Body Type
5'4" 140 LBS 34" 29.5" 39.5" Athletic/Soccer Legs
Sarah’s Feedback: This suit fits my athletic build well overall. Initially, the legs were tight on my calves and quads, but they stretched with use. I don’t have any bunching areas—perfect arm and leg length. For fit, I went with the 8 because it fits my shoulders better—no issues trying to get the suit on/off around my shoulders.

Fit for Jamie - Size Large/8

Height Weight Chest Waist Hips Body Type
5'7" 135 LBS 34" 27" 35" Hourglass
Jamie’s Feedback: Too much material is in the chest and stomach area. It’s also too wide. Strangely, too much material in the knees and calves. Feels shorter through the torso compared to the Rip Curl.

Customer Feedback

New to the wetsuit game, and my daughter and I tried several. We both chose this suit to fit our curvier/average bodies, and it was the most comfortable to get on and off and had the best fit.”

- Fave Recreation Suit

Such a great suit. Very comfortable in northeast winter water. I’m 5 ft 6 and 122 lbs and the 6 fits well, a LITTLE tight on the shoulders/arms/face, but I’m sure will get more comfortable overtime. Highly recommend!”

- Kristen

Fit of Women's Rip Curl Wetsuits

Women's Rip Curl Wetsuit

General fit: Rip Curl has a longer torso and legs with a smaller fit throughout the suit. Because of the smaller fit, in most cases, you might consider sizing up if in between sizes.

Rip Curl makes some models in 6T, 8T, and 10T for you taller ladies!

Fit for Jamie - Size 10

Height Weight Chest Waist Hips Body Type
5'7" 135 LBS 34" 27" 35" Hourglass
Jamie’s Feedback: Fits well - I need a suit that's longer through the torso, and this brand seems to fit that need. Not a lot of extra material anywhere. I'm right on the border of a 10 or a 10T, so I might try a tall one next time I'm looking at suits.

Fit for Hayley - Size 8

Height Weight Chest Waist Hips Body Type
5'8" 145 LBS 34" 31 39" Rectangle/Athletic
Hayley’s Feedback: This is the 2nd most flexible of the suits I tried. I’m in between sizes. A size 8 is big in the armpit. I don’t have enough chest to fill out the suit. Good leg length and arm length for my stringy limbs.

Fit for Mckenna - Size 8T

Height Weight Chest Waist Hips Body Type
5'9" 140 LBS 32" 26" 41" Hourglass
Makenna’s Feedback: I had a bit of extra room in the armpits, chest, and torso. Legs and knees ran tight but stretched out with time and use.

Customer Feedback

This suit is perfectly snug: Size 8T, I am 5'9" and 120lbs. I was nervous about buying a wetsuit without a proper fitting but it fits great and has already been tested in February Socal waters.”

- Seph

I'm 5'5 125 lbs, average build, and ordered the 8, and it fits perfectly.”

Fit of Women's O'Neill Wetsuits

Women's O'Neill Wetsuit

General fit: Overall, O’Neill fits true to size. Ladies with bigger curves or very tall stature tend to fit well because of the type of neoprene used in some of the higher-end models like the Hyperfreak and Psychotech. Ideally, you want to be centered or at the higher end of the weight range. O’Neill also makes some models in short and tall sizes, such as 6S, 8S, 8T, 10S, and 10T.

Fit for Hayley - Size 8

Height Weight Chest Waist Hips Body Type
5'8 145 LBS 34" 31" 39" Rectangle/Athletic
Hayley’s Feedback: Best fitting suit I’ve had! Comfortable all around. Lightweight neoprene. Easy to paddle in. Hard to get on/off around my broad shoulders but with time, it has stretched.

Fit for Makenna - Size 8T

Height Weight Chest Waist Hips Body Type
5'9" 140 LBS 32" 26" 41" Hourglass
Makenna’s Feedback: This suit fits pretty darn good. The arms are a tiny bit short, but nothing drastic—no bunching of any kind anywhere. Maybe a touch of room in the armpit, but it's perfect for mobility. Overall a pretty spot-on fit. Tough to get on/off around shoulders.

Customer Feedback

The suit fits perfectly, which is always a gamble ordering online. I got a size 6, I’m 5’7” 130 lbs for reference. Great quality for the price! The length was perfect for me and my build, definitely comfortable in the water too.”

- Hannah

Fits just as I had hoped. I'm 5'2" 120lbs and got the 6Short and it fits perfectly.”

- CK

Fit of Women's Patagonia Wetsuits

Women's Patagonia Wetsuit

General fit: Patagonia suits run a smidge on the small side. Although it’s gotten much better over the years, the Yulex rubber runs a bit stiffer compared to other neoprene rubbers, so if you're in between sizes, go with the bigger one.

Fit for Sarah - Size 8

Height Weight Chest Waist Hips Body Type
5'4" 140 LBS 34" 29.5" 39.5" Athletic/Soccer Legs
Sarah’s Feedback: Solid fit throughout, specifically on my thighs, calves, and waist. The arms run true to size for length. If I were 1-2” taller, this suit would be the perfect fit for me! I wish Patagonia made this in an 8S because this would be my “go-to” wetsuit for those cold winter surf sessions.

Fit for Hayley - Size 6 and 8

Height Weight Chest Waist Hips Body Type
5'8" 145 LBS 34" 31" 39" Rectangle/Athletic
Hayley’s Feedback: Hard to fit on me. Arms and leg length are good. Can't get into 6 because it crawls up into my crotch, and a size 8 is too big overall.

Customer Feedback

I purchased this suit for surfing and diving in SE Alaska and most impressively, it has kept me warm even when it's snowing! At 5 ft tall and 130 pounds, the size 8 fits really well. There is extra fabric in the legs because of the length but I find that unavoidable at my height. I also tried on the size 6 which fit perfectly everywhere but the shoulders where it was too tight.”

- Amanda

Fit of Women's Roxy Wetsuits

Women's Roxy Wetsuit

General fit: Roxy suits have a more feminine cut to the neoprene - bigger bust and hips with a more narrow waist. Also, the arm length fits a hair on the short side. Roxy makes some models in 6T, 8T, 10T, and 12T, which is a great option for taller ladies.

Fit for Hayley - Size 6

Height Weight Chest Waist Hips Body Type
5'8" 145 LBS 34" 31" 39" Rectangle/Athletic
Hayley’s Feedback: Arms too short. Legs are almost too short. Crawls up crotch. Good for a small girl with a big booty and butt. Very feminine cut in legs and butt.

Fit for Justine - Size 8

Height Weight Chest Waist Hips Body Type
5'4" 130 LBS 33.5" 27" 40" Hourglass
Justine’s Feedback: This suit fits my fine lady curves and small waist really well. The legs run a touch long but the butt, torso, and chest fit is right on!

Customer Feedback

I'm 5'1" and 115 lbs, and the size 4 fits great. I tend to think these run true to size, and usually my suits based on height and weight, with less concern about measurements. That said, I have an athletic build, and am fairly evenly sized at my bust and hips.”

- Katherine

Fit of Women's Buell Wetsuits

Women's Buell Wetsuit

General fit: Buell has a true-to-size fit similar to O’Neill. The ankles and wrists fit slightly bigger than other brands, which makes for a comfortable fit when paired with gloves and boots. Buell makes the RB2 models in 6T and 8T for taller ladies!

Fit for Sarah – Size 8

Height Weight Chest Waist Hips Body Type
5’4″ 140 LBS 34″ 29.5″ 39.5″ Athletic/Soccer Legs
Sarah’s Feedback: The Buell RB2 has a forgiving fit throughout the wetsuit. Although my height is below the recommendation on the size chart, the wetsuit doesn’t run long on me other than a little bunching in the torso. I find that the hood fits the best compared to other wetsuit hoods I’ve worn.

Fit for Hayley – Size 6

Height Weight Chest Waist Hips Body Type
5’8″ 145 LBS 34″ 31 39″ Rectangle/Athletic
Hayley’s Feedback: The size 6 fits my body well but runs short on my long arms and legs. A size 8 would be too big in the body, but my arms and legs would have better length to cover my booties and gloves during the cold winter months. I love the hood. It’s different from other brands with a more boxy shape and a better fitting bill.

Customer Feedback

Love my new Buell! They are very serious about Velcro so beware of time commitment with your frozen hands after a cold surf. ;) The neck is very tight on these wetsuits which may give you a Hulk Hogen vibe for the first few uses but will loosen up over time. Don’t give up! I’m 5’10”, string bean build, and 8T fits the best out of our options here.”

- Kels

I bought a size 10 - 5'8"ish and 143 pounds. Fit across the chest well - I usually have issues b/c I have broad shoulders and 34D chest.”

- Mara

Fit of Women's Hotline Wetsuits

Women's Hotline Wetsuit

General fit: Hotline has unique sizing, and their suits fit stocky/not average body types well. The zipper system on Ultra Hot Combo works well for surfers with limited shoulder mobility because of the large entry that extends from the mid-upper arm all the way across the chest to the opposite side.

Fit for Sarah – Size 6

Height Weight Chest Waist Hips Body Type
5'4" 140 LBS 34" 29.5" 39.5" Athletic/Soccer Legs
Sarah’s Feedback: Easy on/off with a large entry system. Extra neoprene in the torso. I have thick hair and wear it in a bun under the hood - but the hood kept sliding back off my forehead.

Fit of Women’s Sisstrevolution Wetsuit

Women's Sisstrevolution Wetsuit

General fit: Sisstrevution suits are designed and developed for younger surfers in their teens and 20s. They run on the slimmer side with a more narrow cut throughout. We recommend sizing up if you are in between sizes, especially in the thicker 5/4 and 6/5 models.

Fit for Mia – Size 10

Height Weight Chest Waist Hips Body Type
5'6" 150 LBS 37" 29" 40 1/2" Hourglass
Mia’s Feedback: With the 3/2 thickness, I can get away with a size 10 since I like my wetsuit to fit on the snug side, but if I needed a thicker suit, a 10 would be way too tight, especially in the arms and waist. Sisstr suits run true to size with height but are definitely slimmer/smaller in the weight category.

Fit for Anjo – Size 6

Height Weight Chest Waist Hips Body Type
5'1" 130 LBS 34" 30" 34 1/2" Athletic
Anjo’s FeedbackWith my long-legged and short torso stature, my height and weight don’t match up very well with the vendor size chart. I went with a size 6 since it balanced out fairly well with the extra height allowing more room in the chest and waist. Because of my shorter torso, I had a little bit of extra material in the hips. My slender arms didn’t completely fill out the upper arms resulting in room in the upper arm.

Customer Feedback

I ordered a size 2, but it was too small. I am 4'11, 90lbs, 26 waist so I thought this would be a good fit. The 4 is a much better fit, even for someone my size. I am not usually one to say that a product runs small, but I would have to say that in this case.”

Fit of Women’s Manera Wetsuit

Women's Manera Wetsuit

General fit: Overall, Manera fits true to size. However, its unique 3D design lends itself to an even more unique size chart than other brands. Initially, the suits fit very snugly (they are specifically designed that way) and then eventually mold to the shape of your body with time and use. This allows the suits to fit many different body shapes and sizes.

Fit for Sarah H. - Size Medium/6

Height Weight Chest Waist Hips Body Type
5'10" 134 LBS 32" 26" 34" Slender

Sarah H's Feedback: I’m at the bottom of the weight range but on the higher end of the height for a size medium. True to Manera’s feedback on fit, it was super snug at first but definitely loosened up a bit after a few sessions.

Customer Feedback

Fit is standard - got a medium 5’7” 140”
