The Slater Designs FRK I-Bolic Surfboard was designed by Dan Mann as an everyday high-performance shortboard for Kelly Slater.
Meant to be ridden in a variety of conditions, Kelly Slater has been seen riding the Slater Designs FRK Surfboard everywhere. In his machine-made wave pool, Jeffrey’s Bay, the North Shore, and everywhere in between. From the first wave he rode, Kelly knew he had something special. In fact, most the FRK's Kelly has been seen riding have been stock boards straight from Firewire’s factory.
The board features a single to double concave for maximum speed and control while maintaining medium rails for added paddle power. The round tail and five fin option make this board suitable for a wide range of surf. From average beach breaks to pulsing reef breaks, the FRK was built to perform.

Product Construction
I-Bolic Core Technology
Speed, control, strength and response. A core engineered with an I-Beam down center for added strength with flex controlled at the rails using high density foam from nose to tail. Most similar to a PU core. I-beam core construction with flex controlled at the rails using high density foam - an engineering feat developed for performance.
Additional Info
“I knew immediately what I wanted to make him. I saw it all in my head immediately, from the bottom contour to the tail template. The way the volume would distribute through the width, the whole shape. It might actually be the most intuitive design I’ve ever done, probably because I’ve spent so many years both watching Kelly surf, and shaping boards. As crazy as it sounds I was certain it would work for him. The odd thing was, after sending him the board in 2015, I never heard from Kelly about how the board went, and I sort of just moved on to other stuff. Then one afternoon in 2017 I got this stream of text messages one day about how Kelly was blowing up at Trestles on my board. It totally caught me off guard. Just text messages and phone calls flying in from everyone. I sorted through everyone’s messages and learned that Kelly’s good friend from Florida who was in town at the time had grabbed the board from Kelly’s shed where it had sat un-surfed for two years. He surfed it and then told Kelly that Kelly would love it based on having known Kelly his whole life, and having a good idea about what boards he likes and doesn’t like, based on all the times the two of them had swapped boards before." —Dan Mann
Wave Type
Like the majority of traditional shortboard shapes, the FRK is designed for high-performance surfing in critical waves, in up to 6' surf. It loves anything punchy or bowly with some power. Recommended in 2-6' surf, skewing towards average to epic conditions.
Board Features
This is the shape Dan Mann designed when asked to shape Kelly Slater a board for the first time. Featuring traditional shortboard outline with medium entry and exit rocker, medium to low performance rails, and a double concave running through the back half of the board, resulting in the perfect craft for high-performance surfing. Best paired with Kelly's KS1 fin template.
I-Bolic Core Technology
The Firewire patent pending I-Bolic core technology is an engineering feat developed for performance, without the need for external carbon layups or heavy laminations. These models offer the stiffness of Linear Flex Technology (LFT) with the flex and spring-back of their best-selling Helium technology. This is Kelly Slater's favorite technology to ride, offering speed, control, strength and response.
I-Bolic Performance
I-Bolic cores have the stiffness of the Firewire old Linear Flex Technology (LFT) with the flex and spring-back of their best-selling Helium technology. The I-beam ensures firmness underfoot and unparalleled break strength, while the high density foam parabolic rails enable flex and recoil through turns.
I-Bolic Construction
The Firewire I-Bolic technology is a 1.5 lb EPS foam core with a 18mm high density foam stringer in the core, 16mm high density foam parabolic rails to control flex, and a 5mm high density foam springer on the bottom. Paired with their standard fiberglass lamination, on the deck it has a 3mm high density composite deck skin on the deck sandwiched between the double 4 oz E fiberglass cloth layers, and also has double 4 oz E fiberglass capping the bottom.
I-Bolic Lamination Compatibility
I-Bolic cores are paired with standard fiberglass lamination, AWT fiberglass lamination, and Volcanic lamination.
